Bat researchers in Shei-pa National Park have made a new discovery. Choosing the Formosan long-eared bat as the subject of research for the first time, wireless tracking technology was used, a 0.3 gram wireless transmitter attached to bats to find out where they spent their time in the daytime. After carrying the wireless receiver through the broad- leaved forest of the Xuejian area their daytime roost was identified. Researchers found four bats in a small hole in a tree just one and a half meters off the ground. One of the bats was wearing a transmitter and one of the other three had a tag, showing it had once been caught and released by researchers. The national park HQ said that this discovery is the first time the roost of the Formosan long-eared bat has been confirmed. Tracking of the bats will continue to provide more information and in the hope of making new discoveries.
