Dealing with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and Taking Care of Yourself

The administration of Shei-Pa National Park urges people to take it slow when hiking on a tall mountain so that your body will be able to adapt to changes in different altitudes. It is essential to memorize the tip “3Ds –Down, Down, and Down”, which means the best way to alleviate AMS symptoms is to just go down the mountain. Please pay attention to any early signs of AMS that develop in you or your friends. If the pain continues or deteriorates after resting, go to a location on a lower altitude as soon as possible. If symptoms of High Altitude Cerebral Edema or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema occur, go down the mountain immediately. The most critical thing is that the person with AMS symptoms should not stay or go down the mountain alone.

Moreover, there are ways to lower the chances of AMS occurring such as no strenuous exercises, more water, keeping warm, no alcohol, and using a proper dose of sedatives. If you are going to hike to the altitude of more than 3000 meters, it is suggested that you stay overnight at the altitude of 2500 to adapt. Drugs to prevent or ease symptoms of AMS must be prescribed by a doctor and taken as instructed.
