On the afternoon of June 8th, a beach cleaning event was held on Dongsha Island. A total of 75 people, nearly all personnel on the island, were mobilized to clean up the beaches, including members of the Dongsha Coast Guard Command led by Cmdr. Yu-Shan Lin; all personnel of the Dongsha Service Station; service members from the Navy and the Air Force, and medical officers from the Dong Guan hospital. Other participants included Specialist Tse-Min Hsiao from the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, diving instructor Dao-Ren Guo, and 5 researchers from the Institute of Marine Biology, National Taiwan Ocean University and Department of Life Sciences, National Chung Hsing University. A total of 1,800 kg of waste was collected, and results showed that polystyrene, PET bottles, glass bottles and fishing buoys were the most numerous marine debris collected. Re-usable materials will be shipped back to Taiwan and processed by sanitation contractors.
The beach clean-up was organized to emphasize the significance of the World Oceans Day, and to let people understand the perils faced by today’s oceans through direct hands-on experience, consider about the causes of marine debris, and work together to promote marine conservation.
