Several areas in Taiwan possess the resources and features of a national park but have relatively limited resources or are smaller in scale and are therefore not eligible for establishment as a national park for the protection of said areas. The ecological resources of said areas however may undergo irreversible harm if proper planning and management cannot be implemented in the long term.
For this reason, the Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior promulgated the National Park Law and amended certain provisions on November 12, 2010 to facilitate the creation of national nature parks and to provide a legal basis for national nature park establishment. They clearly stipulate the grades, categories, and planning of national nature parks, as well as the relevant regulations that apply to the management of national parks. In the future, an area that possesses protection value, but have relatively limited resources or are smaller in scale and therefore fall short of the criteria necessary for the planning of a national park, shall be included into the national parks system for protection as a “national nature park”.
