The newly opened Paiyun Lodge has been converted from the original cottage-styled building into a two-story steel structure. Shared rooms have also been divided from the original one large room into smaller rooms for four to eight people. More toilets were installed for more convenient cleanup. The first floor of the lodge offers tour guides and space for dining and recreation. Paiyun Lodge provides hot meals; kitchen waste is transported down the mountain to lessen climbers' loads and reduce environmental impact.
In addition to renovating Paiyun Lodge with new equipment, Yushan National Park Headquarters also provides catering, meal ordering in advance and sleeping bag rentals. Now, climbers no longer have to lug heavy loads of food, water or sleeping bags up the mountain. Climbing Yushan has become easier and more convenient than ever. In order to reduce the amount of garbage, kitchen waste, and energy consumption, the lodge does not allow climbers to cook in the lodge, and cooking is prohibited within 30 meters of the premises.
The headquarters has warned that excess food waste attracts wild animals and alters the eating habits of these animals. Rotten or moldy food might also lead to animal illness or death. Currently, the lodge aims to generate zero food waste. Visitors should book and order meals seven days in advance. Meals will be prepared and semi-cooked in accordance in the kitchen of the Tataka Visitor Center. The meals will be transported to the lodge to be heated and served.
The lodge also offers sleeping bags for rent for NT$300. Climbers no longer have to bring too much equipment, and can enjoy a more comfortable climbing experience. Climbers can also preserve their strength for climbing the main peak or other peaks to ensure a safer hiking experience.
Paiyun Lodge offers a Chinese-style breakfast buffet for NT$150; individual lunch and dinner meals are also available for NT$300 per person. In the future, the lodge may serve as an emergency food depot for mountain rescues and other emergencies.
In addition, Yushan National Park Headquarters and Chu Shang Show Chwan Hospital has set up the "Alpine Medical Care Service" to improve hiking and climbing safety. Medical staff are on site every Saturday and Sunday to provide extra emergency medical relief and more comprehensive services.
