The Grand Opening of the 18th Anniversary Celebrations for Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park

The second phase of the park, which used to be the Xiqingpu Landfill, is alsocompleted. The park has a total area of 95 hectares, making it the largestmetropolitan park in the nation. It is also the first metropolitan park in thenation that is successfully converted from a landfill. The park offers soundfacilities and services to the public in the Kaohsiung metropolitan area forthem to get close to nature.

On April 19, 2014,Saturday, the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park of the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of theInterior held a series of “going towards nature, embracing health” programsthat included tree-planting, walking, and the promotion of environmentaleducation to mark its 18th anniversary. Agency Deputy Director General XuWen-long, Deputy Section Head Zhang Wei-quan of the National Park Section, andHuang Zhao-shun, member of the Legislative Yuan graced the ceremony with theirpresence. Mr. Xu looked upon the park to follow the ideals of environmentaldiversity and metropolitan forests and make the thick and green woods andecology available to future generations. He also led the public to each plant atree for the Earth and for the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park.

In addition to tree-planting andwalking for which the public had signed up, there was a series of activities topromote environmental education, including leaving greenery to Kaohsiung, changing garbage into resources, and the observantwatchers. The activities started at 9:00 in the morning at the Rigui Plaza in the first phase of the KaohsiungMetropolitan Park. Participants walked along the shaded walkway of the firstphase of the park towards the tree-planting area around the parking lot in thenorthern side of the second phase of the park. Each pair of hands planted atree, leaving greenery in Kaohsiung to protect and nurture the land upon whichwe all depend to live and prosper. It also kicked off the series of celebrationactivities for the park, in which participants all celebrated the park’sbirthday party in a series of well-designed stamp-collecting activities aboutenvironmental education.
