The 2013 General Assembly of the National Park and the Metropolitan Park Volunteers League

Volunteering at a national park is attractive to many people. Compared to other volunteer jobs, being a national park volunteer suggests a person is enthusiastic, dedicated, professional, and compassionate towards nature. The recruitment always attracts many people to sign up for the post. There are about 2,400 volunteers in our national parks.

The purpose of recruiting volunteers is to broaden the scale of volunteering service, providing guiding and consulting service to the visitors and offering administrative services at the national park in order to arouse people's passion for nature and strengthen the concept of environmental conservation. Volunteers are the bridge between nature and people. They unconditionally dedicate themselves to the land and the next generation.

In the cool early autumn, the 12th General Assembly of the National Park and the Metropolitan Park Volunteers League was held for three days, starting on September 14. Early in the morning, volunteers from each headquarters enrolled for the event. Then, the assembly officially started after the blessing ceremony of the Atayal elders. Acting Director-General Xu Wenlong of the Construction and Planning Agency expressed sincere gratitude and respect to all the volunteers during his speech. Because of their passionate and selfless dedication, national conservation areas and historic relics can be properly protected. The volunteers have made great contributions to environmental protection and conservation.

Director Lin Qing of Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters indicated that the tour guide service is a very important part of the business of national parks. Because they guide tourists and explain things to them, volunteers also acquire knowledge regarding environmental conservation, and help preserve the national park. The President of the Shei-Pa National Park Volunteer Society, Huang Dingsong, encouraged volunteers to exchange ideas and learn new things through this event. Volunteers should often obtain professional knowledge so as to provide visitors with a deeper experience in eco tourism.

We only have one Earth. It needs everyone's effort to preserve and protect the global village. President Huang hopes everyone can love the land of Taiwan as their own mother, giving her children a beautiful environment and a better future. The General Assembly next year will be hosted by Kinmen National Park Headquarters. All the volunteers are looking forward to visiting the hometown of the celebrated wind lion, the historic Western style buildings and enjoy the scenery of the former war zone.
