Waterfowl Season in Kenting: Birdwatching at Longluan Lake

“Kenting Waterfowl Season” will run at Kenting National Park Headquarters from December 21, 2013, to January 26, 2014. Visitors are welcome to come and view these migratory birds amongst the beautiful lake scenery. Activities such as field games and eco-tours have been carefully designed to inspire public awareness of their responsibility for natural ecosystems. Through activities such as the “Longluan Lake Nature Center Waterfowl Explanatory Tour”, “Waterfowl Plaza Display Board”, “Waterfowl Picture Cards”, “Field Games”, “Wetland Waterfowl Jigsaws”, featured speeches, and quiz contests, visitors can learn more about waterfowl species and winter migratory birds and their complex migratory habits.

According to Li Fengmei, a staff member of the Interpretation and Education Section of Kenting National Park Headquarters, waterfowl is a collective term for birds that live on or near water. It does not however refer to a species. These types of bird are adept at swimming and some are also skilled divers. So far, more than 10 species of waterfowl have been observed resting at Longluan Lake. Of these the largest population is tufted ducks, with teals, spot-billed ducks and pintail ducks also common. Through the use of special telescopes installed at the Longluan Lake Center visitors can closely observe these waterfowl. With additional explanation by the trained staff of the center visitors will gain a deep understanding of the ecosystem of the Longluan Lake wetlands and its unique natural scenery. Visitors can even get a glimpse of rarely seen winter migratory birds such as pheasant-tailed jacanas, purple herons, cormorants, and lesser white-fronted geese, as well as rare birds of prey such as fish hawks and Eurasian kestrels. Every glimpse of these feathered friends is sure to take your breath away.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Kenting National Park, Kenting National Park Headquarters held a sunrise-watching event at Longpan Park at 5:10 am on New Year's Day, 2014. Taiwan's world-famous U-Theatre drum troupe was especially invited to perform at this event. Winter migratory birds are the natural treasures of the Kenting National Park so birdwatching and sunrise-watching activities were an apt way to close out 2013 and make new year wishes for 2014. Although a waterfowl season has been held for a number of years now, every year produces surprises. Whether new records in terms of bird numbers, or types of species, progress in environmental protection can be seen. Birdwatching in Kenting has become a popular form of eco-tourism. But while enjoying your birdwatching don’t forget the importance of the work of protecting migratory birds and the passing on of the value of environmental protection.
