2015 Reef Check at South Penghu Marine National Park
Last Updated: 2016-06-14
The establishment of the Marine National Park Headquarters (MNPH) on October 4th, 2007 was an important milestone to the sustainability of sea areas around Taiwan. The MNPH immediately proposed the establishment of Taiwan’s first marine protected area. Dongsha Atoll National Park was established in 2008 to preserve the ecosystem and landscape of Dongsha Atoll. South Penghu Marine National Park was added in 2010 to develop an ecological island, protect natural and cultural resources, promote green energy, and create a friendly environment. South Penghu Marine National Park mainly serves two purposes, research and conservation, and provides an environment for researching coral reefs and marine ecology, hoping to effectively conserve the coral reef, marine organisms and cultural and historical resources in the area. The four islands of southern Penghu are formed by basalt and possess universal values of becoming a world heritage site. The islands also have endemic plants, protected wildlife, precious coral ecology, and unique terraced field homes. Upwelling occurs in the sea area and has created rich marine ecology; there is high coverage of coral reef around the islands, averaging roughly 50%. Management of the South Penghu Marine National Park emphasizes “resource conservation” and “germplasm bank”, and utilizes scientific investigation research, monitoring and data collection to project environmental changes. It uses the ecological data as a basis to formulate effective protection, utilization and management measures. The MNPH has held “Reef Checks” and carried out the clearance of Acanthaster planci on an annual basis to effectively monitor the health of coral, as well as understand the influence of the environment on corals. This year (2015), the MNPH continued to work with the Penghu Marine Biology Research Center and Agriculture and Fishery Bureau, Penghu County Government to monitor the health of the sea area. The investigation of 10 line transects found that Dongyuping Island has the best coral coverage reaching 76.8%, followed by Dongji Island with roughly 68.0%. Corals at Xiji Island that were eaten away by Acanthaster planci between 2009 and 2013 are gradually recovering, and the 4 line transects had an average coverage of roughly 45.9%. The investigation this year showed that the density of Acanthaster planci had dropped to less than 2 per hectare, which is within the standard value for a healthy coral reef. South Penghu Marine National Park has an exceptionally rich marine ecology and high marine species diversity. Coral reefs are an important link in marine ecology, so on your next visit, don’t forget that some damages to the coral reef are unrecoverable. Let us participate in or show concern about the MNPH’s “Reef Check” and Acanthaster planci clearance, so that coral reefs may become sustainable in the blue seas.
