Guidelines and Reservation for Heliu Campground

Heliu campground, located at 171.4 km on Provincial Highway 8, is comprised of 12 wooden tent platforms (3.7*4.2 square meters), restrooms (including cold showers), and washstands, and is equipped with running water and lighting. The daily fee per wooden platform is NT$300 and is first-come, first-served. Use of the campsite depends on your registration order during weekdays and weekends until the wooden platforms are fully booked.

Because numerous scenic spots (Yuewang Pavilion, Lushui Trail, and Tianxiang recreation area) are close to Heliu Campground, this area becomes a very popular site for all visitors. For the benefit of campers: if there are four public holidays in a row (consecutively), advanced booking is required for 6 wooden platform tent spaces (each big tent = 10 persons tents, on a raised plank). Reservation should be completed 1-7 days prior to your requested date. Operation of campground is outsourced by the park. To book tent space, please call 03-8691359 (Service hours: 08:30 am – 16:30 pm) The other 6 wooden platform tent space remain first-come, first-served. For the upcoming four-day Holiday for Children’s Day and Tomb Sweep Day from April 4th – 7th 2019, campground reservation begins at March 27, 2019. Please make a reservation ahead.

A second campground(Lüshui Campground), is 800 meters west of Heliu. The floor of Lüshui campground is earth and grass, and the camp site offers lighting and washstands. This campground is not equipped with tent platforms nor showers. Campers are free to use toilets of Lüshui Service Station (next to the shop). No booking is required and use of the campground is free of charge.

Please

(a) keep the environment clean,

(b) do not build campfires,

(c) do not feed wild animals, and

(d) please bring your trash with upon your departure.

Provincial Highway 8 traffic control information for July 2019

The Fourth Maintenance Office of the Directorate General of Highways, MOTC (Taroko Maintenance Office) is responsible for the maintenance of road safety within Taroko National Park. There will be roadwork between 119.3 km – 184.1 km on Provincial Highway 8 (Bilu Tunnel –Changchun unnel) from 01 July – 31 July 2019. Specifically:

1. Provincial Highway 8 at 119.3 km (Bilu Tunnel Section), 120.13 km (Guanyuan Section), 148.5 (Hualuxi Section), 162.1km (Xibao Section) Traffic Control Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Passage Time: Every 1 hour on the hour for 10 minutes (e.g. 09:00 – 09:10, 10:00 – 10:10, etc.)

2. Provincial Highway 8 at 169.7 km (Tianxiang Section) Traffic Control Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Passage Time: accessibility follows traffic lights.

3. Provincial Highway 8 at 173.1 km (West of Jiuqudong Tunnel Section) Traffic Control Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Passage Time: Every 1 hour on the hour for 10 minutes (e.g. 09:00 – 09:10, 10:00 – 10:10, etc.)

4. Provincial Highway 8 at 184.1 km (Changchunchi Tunnel- Eternal Spring Shrine Section) Traffic Control Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Passage Time: Every hourly on the half hour for 10 minutes (e.g. 08:30 – 08:40, 09:30 – 09:40, 10:30 – 10:40, etc.) Note: Traffic control for all the above construction sites do not apply on weekends and public holidays.

Visitors who are planning to visit Taroko Gorge (the 19km section between Taroko – Tianxiang) will be affected by the above list (for both directions) #2-4. Visitors who are heading to Taichung or Puli, Nantou via Provincial Highway 14A (14 Jia) will be affected by #1-4 of the above list (for both directions).

The Directorate General of Highways reminds drivers to check the Provincial Highway real-time road condition bulletin, listen to police traffic road broadcasts, pay attention to road traffic related information, and plan your itinerary ahead of your trip. Provincial Highway 9 traffic control information for July 2019

1.The 137 km + 500 m (Wuta section) of Provincial Highway 9 will be under construction for improvement of the slope stabilization. The construction begins at 8:00 am –17:00 pm Control schedule: June 25 - July 12 2019 Passage Time: Every 30 minutes.

2. The 144 km + 700 m ~ 146 km of Provincial Highway 9 will be under construction for improvement of the highway drainage. The construction begins at 8:00 am –17:00 pm Control schedule: June 25 - July 31 2019 Passage Time: Not predetermined - accessibility depends on construction conditions.

3. The 158 km (Hepin Township) of Provincial Highway 9 will be under construction for the highway channelization island construction. Control schedule: June 4 - July 18 2019

Passage Time: Accessibility follows the traffic lights. Open one direction of traffic once at a time for both direction traffic. Road users are advised to follow the construction on-site personnel’s direction.

Note: Traffic control for all the above construction sites do not apply on weekends and public holidays.

Notice from Directorate General of Highways: Please pay attention for own safety. In the event of an earthquake or a week after heavy rains, please do not enter the mountain road. Plan ahead before your trip. Have a safe and pleasant journey!

Taroko National Park, in the north-eastern part of the island, faces the Pacific Ocean on the east and covers an area of more than 92000 hectares in the northern section of the Central Mountain Range. The Park is 36 kilometers from north to south and 42 kilometers from east to west. It is situated at the Nantou. The park has many high mountains and steep gorges, with many peaks towering above 3,000 meters in height, and with many natural watersheds. The spectacular Taroko Gorge and the scenic beauty of the Liwu River can be viewed conveniently from the Central Cross-Island Highway. The many waterfalls, diverse forms of plant and animal life, and the indigenous Taroko people, together create the rich texture of this unique natural ecosystem.

【Driving safety 】
  1. Check out the official websites of Taroko National Park, Nantou and Hualien County Governments to understand traffic regulations in the snow season, snow (road) situation, service items, safety instructions, and some other traveling information.
  2. Repair of car in the mountains is difficult. Please be sure to examine the cars and your repair tools before setting off.
  3. Roads in this area are prone to be frozen all over 106K to 112K at Hwy. No. 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway); 39K, 37K and 34.5K (at Kenanguan) to 29.3K (at Kunyang)at Wushe Branch of Hwy. No. 14A. Drive with caution and avoid driving at nights or early mornings.
  4. When driving in the snowing area, please drive out of the area as soon as possible to avoid being trapped by snow piles.
  5. Please equip cars with skid chains when you plan to drive along roads covered with considerable snow.
  6. Follow the instructions by traffic controllers in the snow season.
【Personal safety during outdoor activities】
  1. Mountain sickness easily occurs in the mountainous areas. Please do not carelessly take medicine (like pain-killers). Besides going to the nearest medical station, patients should immediately go downhill.
  2. The weather is extremely damp and cold in the high mountains. Please carry enough clothes to keep off moisture and coldness when traveling in low temperature areas.
  3. Piled up snow on mountains glisten brightly. Please wear sunglasses and caps to prevent snow blindness.
  4. Recommended personal equipment include: thick clothing, coats, rain-jackets, gloves, scarves, woolen cap, hats, sunglasses, thermos, medical lipsticks, pocket warmers, flashlights, portable oxygen cylinders, personal medicine, cell phones (Chungwha Telecom has better reception along the Central Cross-Island Highway).
【Other notices】
  1. If you need lodging, please make inquiries and reservations in advance. Moreover, please bring the portable grain rations and thermos with you.
  2. The water supply in Mt. Hohuan is unstable and pipes in the winter are easily frozen. Please solve these physical problems before entering the mountains.
  3. The treatment of litter is difficult during the snow season; the environment cannot easily be maintained. Please do not litter on the mountains.

Valley and trail route

※ Instructions:
  1. Trails: Shakadang (to the middle spot: Wujianwu/ 5D Cabin), Lyushui Trail, Baiyang Trail, Wenshan Hot Spring Trail (closed), Changchun Shrine Trail. Choose one of them.
  2. The best landscape of the Taroko Gorge is located between Yanzikou to Jiucyudong. Choose one of them to walk (the latter is safer for the separation of cars and tourists).

  2. If taking the train, tourists can get off at Sincheng Train Station and take a taxi (about 7 minutes) to the Visitor Center. Or, tourists can get off at Hualien Train Station and then transfer bus (or rental car) to Taroko Station (at least an hour needed) or to Tiansiang Station (about two hours).
